Project Scope: Upgrade and replacement of obsolete high voltage switchgear with modern RPS switchgear while maintaining uninterrupted operation of the Yarra Trams network throughout the project.

At Yarra Trams critical Crombie Lane Substation, the existing 11kV switchgear had reached the end of its operational life and required full replacement. As the substation plays a vital role in supplying Melbourne’s tram network, maintaining continuous operation throughout the project was essential to avoid disruptions to CBD tram services.

To achieve this, CJ Pearce developed and implemented a carefully staged delivery methodology that enabled the replacement wo`rks to be completed while the substation remained operational. The project was planned in two stages, allowing one section of switchgear to remain in service while the other was safely isolated, removed, and replaced. Once the first stage was commissioned, the remaining switchgear was transferred and upgraded.

Through meticulous project management, stakeholder collaboration, and a strong commitment to safety, CJ Pearce successfully delivered the upgrade while maintaining the reliability of Melbourne’s tram network and ensuring uninterrupted service to the travelling public.

This project was recognised with the 2017 NECA Victoria Excellence Award for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, highlighting CJ Pearce’s dedication to delivering complex infrastructure projects safely and efficiently.
